Bergen


Bergen was founded in 1070 by King Olav Kyrre. The town was favourably situated in relation to shipping traffic and was for a long time the country�s most important commercial, shipping and industrial area.

The city of Bergen is worth exploring. Just to browse around the old streets and alleyways can be an experience. Here, people have lived and worked for centuries. Small wooden houses lie higgledy-piggledy, cobblestoned stepways climb steeply, and a love of flowers spills over everything.

The harbour of Bergen with the characteristic Norwegian gabled houses of the Wharf, which dates back to the Hanseatic time. The rainy Bergen is, according to the people of Bergen, Norways's number one city. Even if the weather can be rather wet in Bergen, the people there love their city

Walk the length of Bryggen to the old fortress of Bergenhus. H�kon H�konsson once ruled all Norway from here, making Bergen the country's first capital city. In 1261 he built the mighty "H�kons Hall" for his son Magnus Lagab�ter's wedding and coronation.

They are proud of Bergen's shipping, trading and cultural traditions. Ever since 1070 when King Olav Kyrre gave town status to this Viking harbour,

Bergen has been open to the world. The city with its 220.000 inhabitants is a spectacular amphitheatre clambering up the mountainsides, looking over the sea.

Bergen is situated in the heart of the popular fjord region. Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord and Geirangerfjord are among the fjords around this part of Norway, and Bergen has always been the ideal starting point for touring these world-famous fjords

Henrik Ibsen was from Bergen.Ibsen's "Peer Gynt" is often produced at Den Nationale Scene in Bergen during summer. The theater opened in 1909 and carries on the two hundred year old drama traditions of Bergen in which Henrik Ibsen is a prominent figure.

Fl�ibanen
Fl�ibanen cable railway takes you from Bergen city centre to fresh air and fantastic scenery in 8 minutes - 320m (asl).
The mountain FIoeien takes its name from the wind vane.
From the top you can enjoy a magnificent view over Bergen and the surroundings. Numerous paths offer easy walks through beautiful woodland terrain with lakes and mountains. During summer the restaurant on top of Mount Fl�yen is open.

Mount Ulriken

Fjords
Bergen is surrounded by one of the world's greatest tourist attractions, the Norwegian fjords. The city is the gateway to these natural masterpieces, which continue to amaze the Norwegian people and many international visitors who are brave enough to visit in our cold and wet climate.

Fjord Formation
The fjords are the geological result of the last ice age, gouged out by mighty glaciers carving their way from the central mountain ranges to the sea.
The largest and perhaps most famous are Sognefjorden and Hardangerfjorden with their numerous tributaries. However, there are many more, with Norway having such a long coastline to form the wonderful and unique fjords .

Sognefjorden
Sognefjorden, the world's longest fjord, is more than 200 km long, up to 1300 meters deep and has numerous tributary fjords.

Hardangerfjorden
Hardangerfjord with its numerous tributaries epitomises the charm of the Norwegian fjords. Hardanger has a rich rural culture, and is a famous fruit growing region.
